Pinwheel Firing On All Pistons!

John Surge and Jeff Donahue knew each other while they were playing in different bands around Long Beach, CA. John put out a fanzine, and Jeff owned a rehearsal studio where tons of bands in the scene rehearsed. The two got to talking about music and what they wanted to do; soon they were writing a whole album?s worth of material that would become the Trouble Doll CD with the goal of creating a guitar album inspired by the spirit of bands they loved, like The Replacements, X, Frank Black, and Husker Du. After enduring various lineups, John and Jeff hooked up with expatriate Australian bass player Fluffy and drummer Matt 'O Connor, who played with Flourescein and toured with The Plimsouls. To record Trouble Doll, John and Jeff put together a ragtag home studio and brought in producer Jim Oddo to help guide them through a recording that would capture the band in all its ragged glory. With the songs recorded, the band circulated tapes to every indie label they could track down. Soon they hooked up with kindred spirit Dave Lebental of Pinch Hit Records, an upstart label in the band?s own South Bay area.

A History Lesson with THIRD GRADE TEACHER

It's lo-fi. Just the way they wanted it. They went into the studio and laid it down raw and mean. Their driving grooves threw off chunks of cement in every direction like a concrete jackhammer on scorching East LA pavement. Their engineer asked, "you wanna over-dub that?" ...they fired him! What can you learn from Third Grade Teacher? That rock belongs in a hard place! Truth is stranger than fiction? By day Sabrina Stevenson teaches third grade in the Los Angeles Unified School District - and evidently she is very well respected. By night she writhes like an evil succubus and howls like a category five tornado. She's frightening and fascinating at the same time. When you put her in front of her bandmates, the thought of Sabrina teaching a classroom of children may be a bit terrifying and confusing. By all accounts, she has a warm mild mannered classroom demeanor that her young students love. After she finishes grading papers and affixing the smiley faces and star stickers, she changes into her alter ego and heads off to her other life; a world of dank nightclubs and strange humanoid personages. She transforms herself from a third grade teacher into the lead singer of Third Grade Teacher. Her twisted stage antics could shatter all warm memories of elementary school and replace them with a perverse recollection of your scholastic youth. The band ended up together like flies stuck on a piece of gas station flypaper. David Guerrero fluttered into the proverbial bug strip when he answered an ad in the classifieds for a guitarist. Their musical styles conflicted, but Sabrina managed to coax David into playing with her as a duo at coffeehouses in Southern California. Laura Smith and Rob Ahlers were next to have their antennae stuck in the inescapable sonic vortex. At the suggestion of David's mother they named the band after Sabrina's day job and band began to play local clubs in Silverlake and Hollywood. They experimented with their musical direction and stage presentation, which led to Sabrina's maniacal approach to performing each song. Clad in plaid parochial school uniforms, the band's dramatic live show is a tidal wave fueled by each performers dynamic style. Third Grade Teacher is one of a growing wave of ballzy female fronted bands that couldn't give a shit about the pop charts. You probably won't see them onstage at a Lilith Fair concert. They exist in a world where cutesy pre-fab pop stars and pop divas are disdained. The sound is lo-fi like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, yet thin and razor sharp like Iggy and the Stooges. Sabrina has the swagger of Patty Smith, the growl of Courtney Love and the psychosis of Linda Blair in the Exorcist. Who knew that behind those scholarly glasses and thick cashmere sweater lurked the forbidden punk priestess! She's a strange bird, no doubt. It's a seemingly improbable story. But as you were told, truth IS stranger than fiction. After seeing her psychotic live performance many parents might be apprehensive in having their children in Sabrina's classroom. But you needn't worry one bit! Sabrina's students will grow up to be doctors, lawyers, politicians, and maybe even a few musicians. She's in an indie band with no cash?she?s not going to quit her day job! And don't be surprised if you find yourself developing a crush on Third Grade Teacher!

Billboard Gives HUGE Props to Munkafust

It's PAYBACK time!

Vegas DeMilo?s new single ?Payback? may soon become the new sports anthem for rivalry games. Can this adrenaline fueled song overshadow the tired mainstays of ?Who Let The Dogs Out? and ?We Will Rock You?? We think so?and so does the NHL, NBA, and NFL!!!! Wouldn't the world be a happier place if they can put to rest "Who Let The Dogs Out?" Listen closely inbetween periods, at half times, during time outs, and every time the "other" team gets a swift kick in the ass! "Payback" is destined to become a classic in the sports world.

Tearaways rock for Tom Hanks

The Tearaways performed for a private party hosted by Tom Hanks last month. Headlined as the St. Matthew's Benefit Concert, this star studded Hollywood event was a huge success. The band performed all their hits along with a few covers that were requested by the likes of Glenn Frey and Tom Hanks himself.

Vegas DeMilo Get SCORCHED!

Here's one man's review of the movie: *************************************** "Scorched" has got an impressive cast-list. Infact I discovered something weird about it's cast: Most of the actors are looking for a comeback. Woody Harrelson for example, hasn't made a decent A-list film in the past 4 or 5 years. I think his last lead-part in a pretty succesfull movie was in "The people vs. Larry Flint." Alicia Silverstone suffers from a simular problem; her latest hit was "Blast from the Past" and that movie dates from 1999. Not to forget the pretty, innocent looking Rachael Leigh Cook, who debuted in the teen comedy "She's all that". After that she's made several flops including "Get Carter" (2000), the film that "killed" Stallone. So yes, firsttime director Gavin Grazer has put together a sublime cast of actors, each one of em' have "one foot in the grave.." and the fact that they're making fun of (basicly) themselves, in this flick, makes it really enjoyable. So? what is the plot about-----> The setting: A bank, in a small town, in the middle of the desert. Three employees plan a individual heist at the same time, however none of them knows about the others. Meanwhile a cloting-store employee plans revenge against a local millionaire (John Cleese). So: is the film funny? Pretty funny, yes. Be prepared for "silly" slapstick comedy! If you like films like "One night at Mccool's" and "Chain of fools", in general the kind of screw-ball comedy in which everything goes wrong, then you'll enjoy this film aswell. John Cleese is finally hilarious again as the millionaire Charles Merchant, and Woody Harrelson delivers the goods aswell! He plays Woods, a deserted character -living in a tent, in the middle of the desert, together with a duck. There are some cool parts aswell by Paul Costanzo and David Krumholtz, the faces you see in teen comedies like "Road trip". Probably the funniest thing in the film is the mean, little dog! You'll laugh... So Recommendable? Yes. This film is not a laugh-out-loud comedy all the way, but it sure has it's moments.
